After I lost about 50 lbs (see my article How a low carb diet helped me lose weight fast), a few years later I noticed for no apparent reason I started to slowly gain weight. I had not changed my diet or activities. The only conclusion that I could come to was that my metabolism must be slowing down as I get older.
So, I did some research online and I learned about intermittent fasting. Below is my experience, but I’m not a nutritionist or doctor so you should talk with your nutritionist and doctor before you try a low carb, ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting or any other diets.

Intermittent fasting practice designates when you should eat, rather than what you should eat. There are several types of intermittent fasting schedules, for example eating only during specific windows of time during the day, like 12 noon – 6 pm or not eating for 24 hours on certain days of the week. This practice can help you eat fewer meals and burn more calories, which can help with weight loss.
I practice a modified type of intermittent fasting in that I eat snacks when hungry outside of the designated eating time frame. I try to only eat full meals between 3 pm – 9 pm daily. I started by skipping breakfast and only eating lunch and dinner. And, sometimes I’d only eat one meal a day, depending how how hungry I felt. In addition to helping me maintain my weight, this practice also frees up more of my time (I don’t need to plan and prepare as many meals) and it helps me save money because I’m buying less food overall. Note, I still strive to eat whole foods as much as possible and try to minimize eating refined foods. See my other article for further explanation How a low carb diet helped me lose weight fast.
I still practice intermittent fasting today and years later it has helped maintain my weight.
